In Austin and around the country school districts are learning from the recent violence on campuses to prevent similar situations. The biggest problem they face is denial – the inability to conceive that it could ever happen here. The possibility is always there – it could happen anywhere at any time and we need to do everything we can to predict and prevent it. Austin and Travis County schools are already ahead of the curve. We have Campus Crime Stoppers, the program that has already prevented a number of school emergencies because students have called the anonymous tips hotline number at 499-TIPS (8477). Police have a tough job on campus – but students and parents can play a huge role.
Campus Crime Stoppers is an award winning program designed to create and maintain a safe campus for our children to learn. Created and funded by Capital Area Crime Stoppers, this program provides a designated tips hotline number that students can anonymously report any illegal activities, weapons violence and narcotics on school campuses. If this tip leads to an arrest, school suspension, recovery of a weapon or stolen property, the student becomes eligible for a cash reward. But more important than the money is the pride they derive in taking an active role in making their school safe for themselves, their friends, classmates and teachers.
